The concept of taking a day of rest once a week is nothing new. The ancient Jews did it. I grew up in a faith that also encouraged it.
What I’ve learned later in life is that a day of rest is not only advisable, I actually experience more balance in my life when I take the time to participate in this practice.
In February, I went to a conference in Los Angeles called “Spark & Hustle.” My good friend invited me and being that it’s only a short plane ride away, I accepted. I wasn’t sure what to expect as I’m not really a “sparkly/hustley” kind of gal, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a tribe of like-minded women also on a mission to serve. A very inspirational event to be sure.
During one of the breaks, I had a nice long chat with one of the women sitting next to me. We both had “sparked” new ideas about the evolution of our businesses and lives. One of the ideas I shared with her was the concept of a day of rest, or “Sabbath.” I wasn’t sure how it was going to go over. Especially since this woman had 4 children living at home! How was she ever going to find down-time for “rest?”
What she shared reminded me of the mothers of my youth. She said that once a week, she and the family would pack up the car and go to some place local (often the beach since they lived in L.A.) and have a “family day.” This was a day without T.V. or video games. It was a time for the family to reconnect and recharge – sometimes with friends and sometimes by themselves. They kept their schedules light on that day so they could simply enjoy time together without distractions.
I’ve noticed over the years even when life is stressed (especially when it is) and I have to force myself to take a day off, everything still gets done. In fact, I’m usually more productive when I take a day off because I’ve given myself time to recharge, renew and reconnect to the things that matter most to me.
So I ask you, what would happen in your life and business if you took a day off? It doesn’t have to be a weekend day. If you can’t take a whole day, would you be willing to practice taking an afternoon off? If you are experiencing stress in your life, a day of rest may be just what the doctor ordered. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please comment below.
